WHY THE YOUNGER GENERATION MUST TAKE THE ISSUE TO THE STREETS
The state of affairs here in the Philippines should not really be far from what is periodically being broadcast by media, what with the advancement now enjoyed in communications.
But really, mankind looks at the same object based on individual perspectives. What can be perceived as loyalty by one can be interpreted as infidelity by another. Sadly, others also offer different meanings, like indifference or downright apathy. And pseudo philosophers can only shake their heads.
The country has successfully booted out two rulers by means of people power. A strongman who ruled for two decades was clipped of his muscles and thereafter replaced by a dainty feminine whose rise to fame was anchored only on the fact that she was the wife of a martyr.
Fifteen years alter, the President whose rise to fame was catapulted via the silver screen, in addition of course to being a macho-looking lady killer, was similarly booted out ironically for enriching himself through a lowly poor man’s vice what in local parlance is simply called “hweteng”.
And what happened to the descendants of these two deposed rulers? Nothing, they even are highly respected not only in social circles but also in the arena of power politics.
Let this writer now turn his sights to current events.
Much surprisingly, the country’s rut may now be called “hi-tech.” Graft and corruption have reached the floor of what was previously considered a bottomless pit one may well wonder if another form of thievery can ever match it. The once-tested ways of stealing money from the government coffers like being employed at the BIR and the customs bureau are no longer as preferred over being hired at the education or the health departments, and even in the lowliest job at being a “basurero” or trash collector can be as lucrative a grafter if he can find a way.
But all of these tricks pale in comparison to what the current rulers do to rob the government. The scheme no longer involves raiding the nation’s treasury, a plot that, in the first place, requires that one should accumulate the revenue first before he can steal. The trick now is simply to borrow money from other sources outside of the country on whatever guise and pretext with the guarantee that the country’s future generations will pay for it.
This trick is really no different from what the former strongman did when he consummated the never-utilized nuclear power plant that was built in the seventies that was never used, but the country paid the entire obligation without ever benefiting from it!
This chronicler can but philosophically lament. No sooner than it will be later, his footprints will be but a memory but his two sons and one daughter, and their own offspring will in their own times roam their own jungles and expectedly life will be a lot tougher for them. Their only consolation is that comparatively, they are educationally better prepared to face life’s struggles so that whatever perils they meet, they hopefully can face them squarely as did their dad during his checkered days.
This philosophical diatribe should now end. It’s not good for his health. And this email also is being made available to those whomsoever would want to read it. Especially the younger generation who surely will have to shoulder the gargantuan loans that the present administration imposed upon them..
But the bugging question remains. Is the nation once again on the way for another people power to change its ruler? Or should it now look at graft with apathy and complete disinterest?!

To My Eminent Brother, THE LION TAMER
I cannot but be seriously interested by your e-correspondence with (Bro?) Earl, concerning current events in our country.
My partricular interest was aroused by "My country has successfully booted out two rulers by means of people power." I have my own peculiar assessment and interpretations of "people power." Even the biblical accounts on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ was instigated by people power!
Would that you had read the books -- CIA Diary by Philip Agee, and Portrait of A Cold Warrior by Joseph Burkholder Smith
(the latter particularly about Philippines).
I feel confident to state that my simple interpretations of events in our country as compared to accounts by seasoned news reporters of the nation's leading media outlets could be more factual, as I owed no one personal loyalties -- but did my jobs as a poor and humble civil servant (as a lowly foot soldier from March 2, 1951 to October 15, 1961; and career civil servant from 16 Oct. 1961 up to my com-pulsory retirement on June 15, 1991).
My services from 1 December 1954 to 30 June 1975 were with the Malacañang Press Office, and the last years were with the Executive Secreary's Office. I would have retired compulsorily on my 65th b-day on 15 December 1990, but was extended for six months.
I could say with humility that I walked through the nooks and crevices of power; but without sacrificing my loyalty to my country and constituted government. And I can say with pride that in ignoring the oft-repeated refrain -- "hitch your wagon to a star" -- I had returned to my roots with clean hands. Happily, or unhappily, the house and lot realized from my retirement gratuity have been foreclosed by the GSIS, and... come what may!
I have my own interpretations of all the occurrences in our national arena. They are far removed from all the make-believe accounts by seasoned media representatives of the present day. But they might not be of interest to you....!
One thing I can say: when I covered the President's Study Room as the Press Office Reporter -- 1963-65 for President Mcapagal, and 1966-72 for President Marcos -- my Press Releases were used as basis of the news reports with their respective by-lines by the regular media representatives from the various radio-tv and newspaper publications nationwide.
Even in retirement, I can only smile and ask -- "can this be true?" of any and every news accounts. Either yes or no!
I now AWAIT for more dissertations from your highly analytical mind, by which, this humble Brother of yours could also be benevolently tamed. He he he.
Best regards.

Illustrious Ka Pule:
Many thanks for that very interesting rejoinder. Indeed, many often have varied views on a single subject, and it is no wonder it should also be for “people power”. Even Christianity, for example, as some would ascribe that Catholics are not Christians at all, but this would be digressing from the topic..
My own interpretation of people power was how it was being interpreted by the general public, nothing more, and if this differed from the interpretations of some, then I must apologize for offending their sensibilities, assuming that I did.
Now, for the gist of your rejoinder.
Yes, the recipient of the email is a brother married to a Filipina and consequently takes interest in our country, not really for his sake but for hers.
The lion tamer and the aging lion are two different creations of the GAOTU; the latter is the limping cat who struggles to make himself still busy meanwhile he is able to breath; the former is the one you mentioned who holds whip and at the other hand, the leash collared to his neck.
The two books that you mentioned would have meant enjoyable reading time for me, if only I could grab a copy, but from where I now sit, that would be wishful thinking
It would indeed be for the aging lion’s reading pleasure if he has had the chance to read the press releases that you wrote, more specifically because it would quite interesting to compare the present and the past even for knowledge’ sake.
Again, many thanks for your reaction, if I am unable to share these thoughts with you in this dimension, I can still try to remember and use it in the next.
With my kindest fraternal regards!

Bro. Jun,
Although I am merely a distant by-stander, I cannot
help but feel strongly about things that are happening
in the Philippines, not only because my wife has
family there, but because I have always been opposed
to the manipulation and oppression of the people.
While we are admonished not to speak of religion or
politics in Lodge, we as Masons certainly have a
responsibility to be actively involved and dedicated
to the Brotherhood of Man and it would be criminal to
sit by and observe without doing anything. Witness the
role of Masons during the American Revolution.
I applaud what you feel and say on the subject, and
pray that there are more Brothers who will become
actively involved in relieving the burden placed on
the Filipine people.
On the lighter side, it is still early here; I have
had my coffee and watched what I call the Italian
no-news news, which focuses on Italian politics and
soccer mainly. Estelle is sleeping, it is just
becoming light, so I will go outside to feed dogs,
cats, birds of all types. Today we will go to the
market in nearby Chianciano. I need to talk with a
vendor there and order a rooster, maybe to get at the
market on Friday in another nearby town. At this
market we usually encounter several Filipinos; most of
them in this area seem to be from Batangas.
I pray that all is well with you and the
lion-tamer; we both send our very bests regards.
Earl
